Something Is Still Moving Beneath Venus’s Scorching Surface

New high-resolution 3D models suggest Venus’s giant rift valleys match signs of very recent or ongoing tectonic stretching.

Researchers at ETH Zurich found that the broad raised flanks of major chasms such as Ganis, Dali, and Devana Chasma fit active crustal deformation.

Published in Nature Geoscience, the study implies some Venusian rifts may be much younger than previously thought and could still be evolving.

The findings strengthen the case that Venus is not a geologically dead world and may still be reshaping its surface from within.
