Third-largest gold hoard ever found in Denmark astonishes archaeologists

Archaeologists in northern Denmark uncovered six intact late Viking Age gold arm rings near a forest path.

The find began when a local resident spotted two rings; four more were later excavated nearby.

The 26.9-ounce hoard, called the Rold Treasure, is Denmark’s third-largest Viking Age gold find.

Declared Danefæ, the rings will be studied further at the National Museum of Denmark.

Experts say the rare hoard may shed light on elite wealth, craftsmanship, and possible ritual or political practices.
