Germany’s new floating lab to test hydrogen, future ship tech, climate-compatible propulsion

DLR marked the keel-laying of MODULARIS, a 48-meter research vessel for maritime technology testing.

The floating platform will trial alternative fuels, propulsion systems, automation, sensors, and uncrewed systems in real operating conditions.

It will support testing of hydrogen, fuel cells, batteries, methanol, ammonia, and digital-twin tools to speed up certification.

The project also expands DLR facilities in Kiel and strengthens Germany’s maritime innovation base.
