Tokyo consortium tests placing data centers under railway overpasses — passing trains introduce severe thermal and vibration challenges

On March 23 a Tokyu Group consortium announced it will install a modular data center beneath an elevated section of the Oimachi Line in Tokyo, starting June 2026.

The trial will test whether compact server infrastructure can run reliably under active railway overpasses, focusing on vibration and differing thermal conditions.

Consortium members are Tokyu Corporation, Tokyu Electric Railway, It's Communications Corporation and Tokyu Construction; Tokyu Construction is building the modular unit, Tokyu Electric Railway provides the site, and It's Communications will supply fiber connectivity.

The container-sized modular unit packages servers, cooling and power; the trial will measure sound insulation, thermal insulation, vibration isolation and cooling performance.

Results will determine viability for other Tokyu locations including Shibuya; the existing optical fiber along the rail could feed such installations, and an NTT Global Data Centers executive says inner Tokyo power-grid connection waits can be five to ten years.
