WhatsApp adds prepaid phone recharges in India as its payments usage still lags

WhatsApp has launched prepaid mobile recharges in India through a partnership with PayU.

Users can top up numbers from major carriers like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea directly inside the app.

The rollout is part of a broader push to increase in-app transactions on WhatsApp.

But WhatsApp’s payments business still trails UPI leaders PhonePe and Google Pay by a wide margin.
