Harvard Researchers Turn Ordinary Knitting Into Programmable Technology

Harvard SEAS researchers used weft knitting, elastic yarns, and patterned stitches to create textiles that snap between multiple stable shapes.

By adding conductive yarn, they turned the fabric into electrical switches, including an LED toggle, a step-counting wearable, and a lampshade with multiple light controls.

The study shows that standard textile manufacturing can produce reconfigurable devices for wearables, sensors, and soft interfaces without rigid components.
