Amazon-owned robotaxi Zoox obtains first commercial service permit for its purpose-built vehicle

Zoox, an Amazon subsidiary, won a commercial operating exemption from the U.S. NHTSA for its purpose-built robotaxi.

It is the first time a purpose-built robotaxi has received this approval, marking a key regulatory milestone.

Zoox can deploy up to 2,500 vehicles over the next two years and plans to launch paid rides in Las Vegas in August 2026.

The approval could accelerate commercialization as Zoox competes with Waymo and Tesla in the robotaxi market.
