Data centers may face temporary power cuts to prevent blackouts on the largest US grid

PJM, the operator of the largest U.S. power grid, will begin temporarily curtailing large data centers and other major users during shortages in June 2027.

The move follows a failed capacity auction that did not secure enough new generation, raising concerns about avoiding blackouts.

It highlights how fast-growing data center demand is straining grid capacity and may force customers to accept outages or build on-site power.

The shift could also push more backup generation, including diesel, with higher emissions risks.
