US receives record 1.7 metric tons of HALEU uranium shipment for advanced reactors

The U.S. received 1.7 metric tons of high-assay low-enriched uranium from Japan, the largest single international uranium shipment in NNSA history.

The fuel will be processed for future advanced reactor use under the DOE’s HALEU Availability Program.

The shipment helps build a domestic HALEU supply chain, easing a key fuel bottleneck for next-generation reactors.

It also advances U.S. energy security and nonproliferation goals through closer Japan-U.S. cooperation.
