New Mexico has a plan to overhaul Facebook and Instagram

New Mexico is asking a judge to order Meta to fund a $3.7 billion youth-safety overhaul for Facebook and Instagram after a jury found the company violated state consumer law.

The proposed abatement plan would also force product changes and pay for mental health, law enforcement, and school programs.

Meta says the request is infeasible, while the judge has warned against overreach but is still weighing evidence.

The case could help define how far courts can go in making social media companies redesign products and finance harm-reduction measures.
