GitHub moves Copilot to usage-based billing as AI coding costs climb

GitHub will change Copilot to a credit-based, usage-linked billing model on June 1.

Monthly AI credit allotments will replace premium request limits, with paid overages after the allowance is used.

Plan prices stay the same and core features like code completions remain, but the fallback to cheaper models is being removed.

The move applies to both individual and business plans and reflects growing pressure to price AI tools by actual compute use.
