OpenAI reportedly developing its own smartphone chips with MediaTek and Qualcomm

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says OpenAI is developing custom smartphone chips with MediaTek and Qualcomm, with Luxshare handling design and manufacturing.

Final chip specs are expected by late 2026 or early 2027, and mass production is reportedly targeted for 2028.

The effort could support an AI-agent phone and potentially other OpenAI hardware products.

If true, it suggests OpenAI is moving toward tighter hardware-software integration for an AI-first consumer device strategy.
