Docomo to Start "Starlink Direct" Connecting Smartphones Directly to Satellites on April 27 — Free Initially

NTT Docomo will launch docomo Starlink Direct on April 27, using SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile to allow direct satellite–smartphone connections.

Docomo line subscribers, including ahamo users, can use the service free of charge for the time being.

Corporate offerings will be handled by NTT Docomo Business; coverage extends nationwide and into territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles.

Features include SMS/RCS/iMessage text and file transfer, location sharing, app data communication, Gemini-powered searches, and emergency-area alerts; supported apps listed include maps, Google Maps, X, YAMAP, Yamareco, Messages, NERV disaster app, Messenger, Google Messages, and weather apps.

Supported devices total 84 models (iPhone 13 series and later; Android models from 2022 onward). A software update and a Docomo SIM are required; generally usable outdoors without obstructions unless in Docomo 4G/5G areas or on Wi‑Fi. Competitors: kDDI plans Starlink Direct from 2025 and SoftBank has announced a similar service.
