Zed 1.0, a code editor optimized for working with AI, is here. Why did the developers of Atom rebuild it from scratch in Rust?

Zed Industries has released Zed 1.0, the Rust-based code editor built by former Atom developers.

Zed avoids Electron and uses its own GPU-accelerated UI framework, GPUI, for a fast native feel.

The editor adds DeltaDB for fine-grained change history and ACP support to work with multiple AI agents such as Claude Agent, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor Agent.

Zed also launched Zed for Business, signaling a push toward enterprise adoption and AI-assisted development workflows.
