WhatsApp notifies hundreds of users who installed a fake app that was actually government spyware

WhatsApp said it notified about 200 users who may have installed a fake iOS WhatsApp client that contained government spyware.

The company logged those accounts out, warned them about privacy risks, and urged removal of the unofficial app.

WhatsApp accused Italian spyware maker SIO of creating the fake app and said it will send a legal demand to stop the activity.

TechCrunch previously reported SIO used malicious Android apps and that the spyware included a code identifier called Spyrtacus.
