Scientists Discover Stem Cells That Could Regrow Teeth and Bone

Science Tokyo researchers identified two stem cell lineages that build tooth roots and the surrounding alveolar bone.

Using genetically modified mice and lineage tracing, they mapped how mesenchymal progenitor cells develop into odontoblasts, cementoblasts, and osteoblasts.

The study also uncovered CXCL12 and canonical Wnt signaling as key pathways that guide these cells’ specialization during development.

The findings in Nature Communications provide a cellular roadmap for future tooth and bone regeneration therapies beyond implants and dentures.
