Inside the Race to Develop a Test for the Rare Andes Hantavirus

The University of Nebraska Medical Center rapidly developed and validated its own PCR test for Andes hantavirus after a cruise-linked exposure.

The test was built from research materials and reagents provided by the University of New Mexico because no ready-to-use clinical assay was immediately available in the U.S.

Early diagnosis can confirm infections sooner, guide treatment, and help public health officials isolate cases to reduce further spread.

Federal testing for the rare hantavirus remains limited and is still being validated.
