US Navy to develop new long-range anti-submarine weapon for quieter underwater threats

The U.S. Navy plans to launch the Long-Range Anti-Submarine Weapon (LRAW) program in 2027, with development and testing running through 2031.

Budget documents show more than $150 million in funding, suggesting LRAW could replace the current Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rocket (VLA).

A longer-range anti-submarine weapon would help surface ships hit submarines that use standoff tactics and are harder to detect.

The program may also align with AUKUS cooperation, potentially involving the UK and Australia in future anti-submarine capabilities.
