Crypto scam takes advantage of Strait of Hormuz crisis by taking fake payments, leading to two ships being fired upon — two vessels reportedly fell victim and paid fake 'Iranian authorities'

Scammers reportedly posed as Iranian authorities and demanded cryptocurrency “clearance fees” from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

A maritime risk firm warned the fake messages targeted vessels with payment requests in Bitcoin or Tether to secure passage.

Reuters said at least two vessels were fired on, and one may have paid before being attacked.

The case highlights how regional tensions can be exploited for shipping fraud in a critical global trade route.
