Canada is imposing a 15% tax on streaming services to support local content

Canada’s CRTC has raised funding obligations for large streaming platforms to 15% of Canadian revenue under the Online Streaming Act.

The levy includes set-asides for Canadian, French-language, journalistic, and potentially Indigenous content, and could generate about $2 billion for local production.

U.S. companies and industry groups, including Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Spotify, and the Motion Picture Association, are pushing back.

The decision could reshape how global streamers operate in Canada and may lead to more legal and trade disputes.
