How we’re responding to The New York Times’ data demands in order to protect user privacy

OpenAI says it is no longer under an indefinite preservation order and has returned to normal data-retention practices.

While appealing The New York Times’ broader retention request, it will securely keep a limited set of consumer ChatGPT and API data from April to September 2025.

Access to that data is restricted to a small legal and security team, and it cannot be used or disclosed beyond legal obligations.
