John and Brenda Romero said the current games industry feels worse than the 1983 North American crash.

Romero Games denied it closed but confirmed funding was pulled and a project was cancelled after its publisher withdrew.

The studio cut staff from 110 to nine and the founders said even successful releases have not prevented layoffs.

Brenda Romero said she is unsure how the industry will recover and confirmed the studio is not using generative AI.
