World’s most powerful neutron source unlocks crystals 100x smaller with 2.8 MW boost

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source has made major progress in its proton power upgrade and is nearing 2.8 MW.

The higher beam power will enable faster, more precise neutron scattering on much smaller samples.

Experiments that once took days could be completed in hours, boosting sample throughput and mail-in studies.

The upgrade will improve atomic-level data for batteries, quantum materials, superconductors, pharmaceuticals, and more.
