Anthropic to pay €1.3bn in biggest copyright settlement on record

Anthropic has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle claims that it used pirated books to train its Claude AI model.

The settlement covers about 500,000 works and ends the largest U.S. copyright class action to date.

A prior ruling said training on lawfully obtained books may qualify as fair use, but storing pirated copies does not.

The deal sets a major precedent for AI companies’ liability over copyrighted training data.
