China deploys moon-tested basalt fibers to protect farmland from desertification

China is rolling out new anti-desertification projects in Xinjiang to stabilize sand and protect farmland near the Taklamakan Desert.

The effort uses basalt fiber and other engineered materials to curb wind erosion, improve soil conditions, and reduce land degradation.

Authorities say the projects support a broader ecological barrier and food security push in a key agricultural region.

Some of the same material science is also linked to China’s lunar technology research, including work tied to Chang’e 6 and the International Lunar Research Station.
