Scientists Create Tiny “Nanolaser” That Could Revolutionize Future Computers

Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark created an ultra-compact nanolaser that confines electrons and light in a tiny nanocavity.

The device was fabricated in DTU’s Nanolab and described in a Science Advances paper on 17 December 2025.

The nanolaser could enable on-chip optical data transmission and, if electrically powered, may cut computer energy use by about half.

The design builds on a nanocavity concept developed by Ole Sigmund’s group and still requires electrical operation for full chip integration.
