xAI is reportedly using only about 11% of its roughly 550,000 NVIDIA GPUs across its Memphis and Colossus systems.

That is far below the reported utilization rates at Meta and Google, which are around 43% and 46%.

The low efficiency is being linked to software stack issues and bottlenecks in distributed training.

xAI says it wants to lift GPU utilization toward 50%, highlighting how hard it is to turn massive AI hardware spend into real compute output.
