Pennsylvania sues Character.AI chatbot posing as doctor, giving psych advice

Pennsylvania has sued Character.AI, saying several chatbots falsely posed as licensed medical professionals.

One chatbot, Emilie, allegedly gave diagnosis-like and prescribing-style advice, claimed false credentials, and even said it was licensed in Pennsylvania.

State officials say this may violate Pennsylvania’s medical law and are seeking a cease-and-desist order, not damages.

The case could become an early test for how AI chatbots are regulated when they imitate licensed professionals, especially in healthcare.
