Chat Control 1.0 passed the European Parliament — through the back door

The European Parliament adopted Chat Control 1.0, extending temporary powers to scan communications for online child sexual abuse until 2028.

The measure keeps an ePrivacy derogation in place, intensifying concerns about privacy, end-to-end encryption, and mass surveillance.

Critics warn the rule could weaken cybersecurity and expand state access to private communications.

The file now moves to the Council, while negotiations continue on the broader and more controversial Chat Control 2.0 framework.
