Google begins letting users change the part of their address before "@gmail.com" in the US

Google began offering U.S. Google Account users the ability to change the part of their address before @gmail.com for accounts that end with @gmail.com.

Users can switch to a new @gmail.com address if it is not already used by another Google Account; the change flow is available in Settings > Personal info > Email.

Photos, messages, and mail are not affected by the change. The previous address is retained as a backup/alternate and cannot be fully removed.

Mail sent to either the old or new address will arrive in Gmail, both addresses work for signing in, and users can revert to the prior address.

The change is not yet available in Japan. New @gmail.com addresses can be created once every 12 months, up to three times. Google also announced 'AI Inbox' and is offering a U.S. beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
