Docomo to monitor brown bears in real time from base stations, with AI analysis for rapid alerts

NTT Docomo is launching a proof-of-concept in Hokkaido to detect brown bear sightings in real time using AI-powered surveillance cameras at two base stations.

The trial runs from May 22 to November 30 and analyzes video to quickly spot bear activity near populated areas.

By combining low-latency networks with docomo MEC, the system is designed to send alerts now and could later support location tracking, reporting to authorities, and deterrent sounds.

The effort aims to make wide-area bear monitoring more practical where manual patrols are difficult, helping improve early response and resident safety.
