German EV Subsidies Begin And China Could Be A Big Winner

Germany has launched a new EV and plug-in hybrid subsidy program, offering up to about €6,000 and applying retroactively to January 1, 2026.

The aid is means-tested by income and household size, with no price cap, which analysts say will favor mass-market models.

High fuel prices and the subsidy structure could make low-cost Chinese EVs highly competitive in Germany despite EU tariffs.

That could speed up EV adoption while putting more pressure on European automakers, including Volkswagen, Skoda and Stellantis.
