Sen. Ed Markey sent letters to seven autonomous vehicle companies asking how often their vehicles rely on remote assistance workers.

All seven companies declined to disclose the frequency of remote assistance, according to Markey's report.

Markey asked the NHTSA to investigate and said he is working on legislation to regulate remote operators.

Tesla acknowledged its remote workers can temporarily assume direct vehicle control as a final escalation step.
