New Evidence Data Centers Cause Hotter Weather

A new study found data centers can measurably warm nearby neighborhoods by releasing waste heat.

Researchers measured temperature increases of about 1.5 to 4°F downwind of four Phoenix-area facilities within roughly 500 meters.

The results show large data centers can create localized heat islands, not just consume lots of power and water.

That raises a new environmental concern as AI and cloud infrastructure rapidly expand, with possible local weather and health impacts.
