A heat dome over Spain and Europe pushed late-May temperatures far above normal, with Oviedo hitting 34.3°C.

A persistent subtropical ridge trapped very warm air across the region, driving record or near-record readings in Spain and beyond.

AEMET said the episode was not officially a heat wave, but it still brought unusually intense early-season heat.

The anomaly affected normally milder areas and raised climate and health concerns across Europe.
