A fungus found in NASA cleanrooms, Aspergillus calidoustus, produced spores that withstood intense UV, low pressure, cold, dust, and long-term radiation.

In tests mimicking deep-space and Mars conditions, it showed survival traits that could let it travel through space and potentially contaminate Mars.

The study raises an overlooked planetary protection concern: future Mars missions may need to account for hardy fungi, not just bacteria.

Researchers say contamination controls for Mars 2020, Artemis, and other missions may need to be tightened and broadened.
