Android phones could get this impressive under-display face unlock tech pretty soon

Metalenz unveiled Polar ID, a compact face unlock system that uses optical metasurfaces and polarization sensing to hide most hardware under an OLED screen.

The company says the technology could reach smartphones and laptops in 2027, with an under-display version likely following in 2028.

Polar ID is positioned as a Face ID-like alternative for Android devices, aiming for stronger security and better low-light performance than current under-display cameras.

Google’s Pixel 11 reportedly will not get new face unlock hardware this year, so the next major Android hardware shift may still be a few years away.
