ChatGPT adds a feature that contacts parents or others when self-harm is discussed

OpenAI is adding a Trusted Contact feature to ChatGPT for adult users.

If systems and trained reviewers detect serious self-harm risk, ChatGPT can send a limited alert to the user’s chosen friend, family member, or caregiver.

Teen accounts under parental controls can also trigger guardian notifications, even without a designated contact.

The move extends ChatGPT’s safety response beyond helplines, but it also raises privacy and consent questions.
