Europa’s Hidden Ocean May Be Locked Beneath a Frozen Wall

New simulations suggest Europa’s ice shell may freeze and seal fractures too quickly for buried ocean water to reach the surface easily.

Rutgers researchers led by Lujendra Ojha found that turbulent water moving upward would likely cool and freeze before traveling far.

That means direct exchange between Europa’s subsurface ocean and shallow ice may be rare, limiting simple access to the hidden sea.

Because Europa is a major habitability target, future missions may need more advanced methods to test whether its ocean could support life.
