Researchers at the University of Hong Kong found in preclinical models that resmetirom reduced liver fat, lowered MDK activity, and slowed fatty liver–related liver cancer growth.

The FDA-approved drug, already used for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease, may have a broader role in preventing or suppressing hepatocellular carcinoma.

The study points to a promising pathway for patients with obesity- and diabetes-linked liver cancer, especially those who respond poorly to current immunotherapy.
