Amazon Seeks Approval for 5,105 Satellites to Expand Direct-to-Device Service, Intensifying Race With SpaceX

Amazon has asked U.S. regulators to approve a direct-to-device mobile network built around Project Kuiper and a planned Globalstar acquisition.

The proposed system would use up to 5,105 satellites, with deployment expected to begin in 2028 if licensing and the deal are approved.

The service could bring smartphone connectivity to areas without cellular coverage, including emergency and remote-use scenarios.

The move pushes Amazon deeper into satellite communications and could sharpen its competition with SpaceX’s Starlink.
