Scientists found a six-month-old Neanderthal infant from a cave in northern Israel was unusually large and developmentally advanced for its age.

The team analyzed 111 bones and saw signs of rapid early growth in the child’s skeleton and skull compared with modern humans.

The findings, published in Current Biology, support the idea that Neanderthal children matured faster and were more robust.

Researchers say this likely helped Neanderthals adapt to harsh prehistoric environments.
