Giant truck treadmill: US builds ‘road in a lab’ to test semi-trucks without highways

Argonne National Laboratory, backed by the U.S. Department of Energy, has opened a first-of-its-kind indoor truck testing facility.

The Heavy-Duty Dynamometer Test Facility can simulate driving loads for Class 3-8 trucks without needing highway testing.

Researchers and industry can use it to validate trucks, fuels, drivetrains, and automation in repeatable conditions.

The setup is expected to cut development time, cost, and risk for freight technology innovation.
