California’s first carbon vault starts trapping CO2 more than one mile underground

California’s first operational carbon capture and storage site has begun injecting CO2 underground in Kern County.

California Resources Corporation’s Carbon TerraVault I will store captured emissions in depleted reservoirs more than a mile below the surface.

The project marks a major milestone for California’s climate strategy by turning carbon storage plans into active operations.

More CCS projects and permits are expected to follow as the state builds out new emissions-reduction infrastructure.
