US Navy’s ‘hellscape’ drone plan could complicate China’s Taiwan playbook, experts say

The U.S. Navy plans to field more than 30 medium unmanned surface vessels and thousands of smaller drone systems in the Indo-Pacific by 2030.

The goal is to build a dense autonomous “hellscape” that raises the cost of Chinese military action and complicates targeting around Taiwan.

Taiwanese experts broadly welcome the concept as a deterrent tool, especially against blockade or invasion scenarios.

But they warn that production, shipping, basing, rough seas, and missile vulnerability could limit real-world effectiveness.

Taiwan also still lacks a mature domestic drone force, making sustained deployment and support a key question.
