UK police bodies are urging tougher rules that would block under-16s from platforms with risky features, including stranger DMs, encrypted chats and harmful recommendation algorithms.

The proposal targets weak age checks, nude image sharing and easy discoverability, which authorities say increase online risks for children.

The move comes as the UK government weighs broader age-based restrictions, while Ofcom already has powers to fine noncompliant platforms under the Online Safety Act.

If adopted, the policy could force major changes in how social media, gaming and AI platforms are designed for children in the UK.
