Uber wants to turn its millions of drivers into a sensor grid for self-driving companies

Uber is exploring a plan to turn part of its driver network into a sensor-equipped data grid for autonomous vehicle and AI training data.

CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga said the idea would expand beyond AV Labs’ small Uber-operated fleet into a broader ‘AV cloud.’

The system could collect real-world driving data and support shadow-mode testing for partners like Waymo and Wayve.

If successful, Uber could become a major supplier of labeled, real-world training data for self-driving and physical-world AI.
