User-replaceable batteries are coming back in a big way

The EU has adopted battery rules that require most portable devices to let users remove and replace batteries with basic or supplied tools.

Manufacturers must also keep spare batteries available for years, pushing better repairability and longer device lifespans.

Smartphones and tablets are covered by separate rules, while some wearables may still get exemptions.

The policy is expected to cut e-waste and make more consumer electronics easier to fix and maintain.
