Enzyme repairs age-related protein damage once thought to be irreversible

Revel Pharmaceuticals and collaborators developed CMLase, an engineered enzyme that breaks down the age-related damage marker CML and restores it to lysine.

In tests, CMLase significantly reduced CML on modified proteins and in tissues from older donors, including the lens, skin, and arteries.

The findings suggest a possible way to enzymatically repair age-related protein damage, opening new paths for anti-aging and tissue-repair research.

However, its effectiveness and safety in living organisms have not yet been confirmed.
