World’s first hydrogen-powered engine for big cargo ships tested in Japan

Japan’s J-ENG and Kawasaki began onshore tests of a large two-stroke hydrogen-fueled marine engine.

The prototype 6UEC35LSGH ran stable combustion across six cylinders and used hydrogen for over 95% of fuel energy at full load.

The engine is due for delivery in January 2027 to power a 17,500-dwt vessel, with full sea trials planned in fiscal 2028.
